How to make Gesso at home ( very low cost ) and how to use Gesso on canvas

Gesso is a primer for canvas sheet or stretch canvas board. It get shiny look to painting. If you are making an acrylic painting on canvas then it’s very important . If you buy from market then it’s very expensive but you can make at home at very low cost so today we learn making  Gesso step by step in simple and easy way also learn “ how to use Gesso on canvas "

7 Basic material required for making Gesso

  • Calcium carbonate powder or chalk powder ( gypsum )
  • Strong glue like pva binder or Fevicol 
  • Water 
  • Weighing machine ( also use approximate value by any other reference )
  •  Big Bowl , big size disposable cup and medium size containers 
  • Hand blender machine 
  • Acrylic paint ( optional )

Now we are making Gesso :-

Step 1 - 

First of all decide that how much quantity do you want . Let you want to make 1 kg Gesso then take  Calcium Carbonate powder or chalk powder ( 252 gm ) in big bowl.

Step 2 -

Now take water ( 332 gm ) and mix with Calcium Carbonate powder or chalk powder in big bowl using hand blender machine. Blend it for 5 minutes and Make a good mixture.

Step 3 -

Now take fevicol Glue or pva binder ( 416 gm ) and mix into the mixture . If you want white bright Gesso then add small amount of white fabric or acrylic paint and blend for 10 minutes.

Step 4 - 

Now store into a Airtight container and use for any types of canvas .

Formula of Gesso :-  (25.2 % chalk powder + 33.2 % water + 41.6 % Fevicol or PVA Binder )

How to use Gesso on Canvas paper or Canvas sheet and stretch canvas board :-

It’s very simple. Apply first coat of gesso on canvas and left to dry after someone time apply second coat and left to dry and repeat this process one more time . Now rub the canvas using sandpaper.
  • Always Use big flate brush or a knife 
  • Apply thin layer of gesso
