How to make an Oil Pastel sunrise background for beautiful paintings
Hello friends! Today, I’ll guide you through creating a beautiful sunrise background using oil pastels. You can use this background to make various paintings by drawing different silhouettes over it. In this tutorial, I’ve chosen to draw a Goddess Durga silhouette to fit an Indian festival theme. I hope this inspires your creative side! Let’s get started.
Materials Required-
Preparation
Stick the paper to a drawing board or clipboard using masking tape. This will prevent the paper from moving during drawing and leave a clean border around the artwork.
Step-1 Draw the Sun
Draw a Circle
Use a circular object and lightly draw a circle with a pencil in the middle, toward the lower part of the paper. This will represent the sun.
Step-2 Color the Sky
Apply Violet
Start by applying violet around the drawn circle to create the outer part of the sky.
Apply Yellow
Next, apply yellow color closer to the circle. This will brighten the area around the sun.
Add Orange
Apply orange between the yellow and violet areas to create a smooth gradient.
Blend the Colors
Use a tissue paper or your fingers to blend the violet, yellow, and orange together for a soft sky effect.
Apply Light Blue and Ultramarine Blue
Now, apply light blue to the upper part of the sky and ultramarine Blue at lower part also blend . This will add depth to the background.
Reapply Yellow
Go back and add more yellow around the circle if needed, blending it into the sky to make the sun glow.
Step-3 Color the Sun
Apply Red
Apply red pastel to the top part of the circle to create warmth and depth.
Add Yellow to the Center
Apply yellow pastel to the middle of the circle to brighten the sun.
Add Light Orange to the Bottom
Apply light orange pastel to the bottom part of the circle for a gradual transition.
Apply Violet
Randomly apply violet to different parts of the sun to create a dynamic look.
Blend the Colors
Smoothly blend the colors in the sun so they transition naturally, giving it a glowing sunrise effect.
Step-4 Add Cloud Effect
Use Violet for Clouds
To create clouds, apply violet in front of the sun. Blend it smoothly into the sky for a subtle, misty cloud effect.
Step-5 Draw Silhouettes
Sketch with 8B Pencil
Once your background is complete, use an 8B pencil to sketch a silhouette over the sunrise. I’ve chosen a Goddess Durga silhouette for an Indian festival theme. You can outline her in a powerful stance.
Step-6 Final Details
Darken the Silhouette
Go over the silhouette with the 8B pencil again to make it bold and striking against the sunrise background.
Clean the Edges
Use an eraser to clean up any unwanted pencil marks, making the silhouette sharp and clean.
Step-7 Remove Masking Tape
Carefully remove the masking tape to reveal a neat border around your artwork.
Step-8 Protect the Art
To preserve your artwork, spray a fixative over it to protect it from smudging and dust.
And there you have it! A stunning oil pastel sunrise background with a beautiful silhouette. Feel free to use this technique for various themes and explore your creative ideas!
